PLANTATION

APRIL 2021

The plantation our tenant is currently harvesting is a fairly traditional forestry model, focussing on economic sustainability — maximum return in minimum time. Good plantations can also find room for being environmentally sustainable. We are including a third goal — social sustainability.

We think this begins with being inclusive and collaborative, bringing together people from our broad community to nut out the challenges.

In mid April we held a workshop at Yambulla, exploring what a triple bottom line, 440 hectare plantation could look like. We had stakeholders from forestry, ecology, First Nations, finance, regenerative agriculture and landscape architecture backgrounds.

Our workshop demonstrated how rewarding this can be. 11 participants over 3 days eating together, sharing ideas, thinking, sleeping. Repeat. Great outcomes, great venue, great project.
