We are bringing in the data from the 12 cameras we have in the field and getting a snap shot of what is happening in the landscape.
The short story is we have considerable amounts of feral cats, foxes, deer, pigs. But also plenty of dingoes (which we knew about as we hear them howling all night!). Dingoes are important as they are the only native predators of feral animals so their presence helps with control.
40,000 images a month need to be tagged and filed, each feral animal capture is then put into a spreadsheet, equating to about 20 hours of work each month. It's a big job but the knowledge will enable us to make informed decisions on how to implement feral animal control.
2.8-5.6 million cats roam 99.9% of the Australian lands (increased numbers in high rainfall years like now). Feral cats kill 1.4 billion native animals EVERY year, the same estimated number killed in the Black Summer fires. Cats are the primary driver of mammal extinction in Australia with 34 species wiped out since colonisation and an additional 74 under threat. Controlling their numbers is one of the most important conservation measures we can undertake.
Feel at home in our secluded, architect-designed off-grid guest lodge. Surrounded by nothing but nature as far as the eye can see.
Cool and breezy inthe summer and cosy with wood-fired central heatingin the winter.
